Drinking sugary beverages is the worst decision a diabetes patient can make. These beverages are rich in carbohydrates, which increases blood sugar levels. They contain fructose, which increases insulin resistance. Drinks with high levels of fructose can cause metabolic changes that promote belly fat and increase the level of cholesterol and triglycerides.
To control your blood sugar levels, consider drinking unsweetened iced tea, club soda, and water, instead of consuming sugary beverages.
Full-fat Dairy Products
Low-fat milk dairy products such as yogurt and cheese reduce the risk of high blood sugar. High-fat dairy products such as butter and whole milk increase blood sugar and cholesterol levels. High cholesterol level due to consuming saturated fats increases the risk of getting heart diseases.
Saturated fats increase your body’s insulin resistance resulting in increased blood sugar levels. To control your blood sugar level, consume dairy products that are rich in good cholesterol (unsaturated fats) such as yogurt and coconut milk.
White Bread, Rice, and Pasta
It is not advisable for anyone to consume refined starch, let alone people struggling with diabetes. White flour and rice are not nutritious. They are products of highly refined grains and have very low fiber.
Eating refined starch spikes your blood sugar levels. Diabetes patients are encouraged to eat whole grains such as whole grain bread, wild rice, and cereals. Whole foods break down slowly, reducing the risk of high blood sugar levels.
Fruits are rich in minerals and vitamins such as potassium and Vitamin C, which are essential to our bodies. Dried fruits have a high concentration of nutrients and sugar because they lose water in the process.
Raisins have three times more carbohydrates than fresh grapes. Diabetes patients should consume fresh fruits instead of dried fruits. Consuming dried fruits such as Plumsor, Raisins, Apricots, and Peaches increases blood sugar levels.
If you’re struggling with diabetes, you should avoid drinking alcohol or drink as per your doctor’s recommendation. Alcohol can either cause your blood sugar level to rise or fall depending on alcohol level.
If you’re using diabetes pills to promote insulin production, avoid consuming alcohol. The two together can cause insulin shock or hypoglycemia.
